Using the Psychology of Color to Increase Curb Appeal

A new roof is a big investment and adds value to the property. It’s a chance to freshen up or give your home a complete face-lift. But it’s also a scary decision because you will live with your choice for a long time.  Curb appeal with the right color and style of roofing shingles makes a big difference so it’s important to get it right.

Color evokes emotion and you want to aim for the wow effect to increase the value of your home.  If you’re looking to add more excitement or a knockout new look for your home, don’t overlook the power of using color on your roof to help coordinate exterior accents like paint, trim, and even landscaping. There are several elements to consider when choosing the color and style that will be best for your home.

One of the ways to decide the color palette for your new roof is to look at and create Style Board Favorites.  You want to make sure the house blends in with the neighborhood but has that unique look that causes you to stand out in the crowd at the same time.  Shingle colors should blend with the home’s natural surroundings and make the gardens and landscaping look beautiful.  My favorite Owens Corning palettes are with their Storm Cloud, Onyx Black, and Pacific Wave shingles.

As you are choosing a shingle color, also consider its performance, wind warranty coverage, and take into account the complete roofing system, and realize you will spend more for better quality. Do not let a contractor decide the colors for you; be informed and take a look at all of your options. Owens Corning Roofing has a great online visualization toolDesign EyeQ,  that allows you to digitally “try-on” different roofs on your house.  But it’s also very important to check your selected shingle colors against your home and landscaping at different times of the day and in different lighting. Ask your contractor to give you addresses so you can see the selected colors on real local homes as colors change from seeing them 2 feet away versus 30 feet in the air. Also keep in mind any homeowner association or subdivision rules and the style of the home when choosing roof color.  Think of your roof as your home’s hair color and style and how important it is to get it just right.

Brand and third-party recognition are also important factors when choosing the right roofing materials. Owens Corning has a solid reputation and varying price options that allow for shingles to be in your budget whatever it is. And it is highly recommended by other women earning it the Women’s Choice Award for four years in a row.

The Oakridge Shingle line – is a step-up from 3-tab shingles, these architectural shingles provide long-lasting performance and striking beauty and are the more affordable option

The Duration Series – adds bright, bold and brilliant colors for spectacular curb appeal and is a more durable top-of-the-line option because it has a technology called SureNail in the nailing zone

Testing out both the Oakridge and Duration Series shingles of Owens Corning has proven to be an excellent strategy. Owens Corning is a recognized brand that provides roof coverage at various price points. Both houses are beautiful and Owens Corning can help improve your curb appeal!

Once your roof is installed, it takes a lot of money and effort to change the decision you’ve made, so take your time when deciding which colors will look best on your roof.
