As you may know, I love credit card points and am a bit of a credit card junkie! I will get a card, use it for periods of time, then get rid of it when it has served the purpose.
You may wonder – what’s your credit score – mid 800’s and I do something called “travel hacking”
Travel hacking involves strategic approaches to maximize travel benefits, often through loyalty programs and credit card perks. Consider researching and leveraging airline and hotel loyalty programs, accumulating points through credit card spending, and staying updated on promotions. Be mindful of responsible credit card use and focus on programs aligning with your travel preferences for optimal benefits. Travel hacking allows individuals to explore more destinations, upgrade accommodations, and experience luxury travel without significantly increasing their expenses.
So – what am I suggesting now?
If you have read the news recently – Alaska Airlines is set to purchase Hawaiian Airlines. Read more about it here
So get both credit cards. And you can do them both right now or one at a time – just start with Hawaiian (as that is the airline to be purchased)
Step 1: First, get the Hawaiian card –
Step 2: What you need to know. In the first 90 days you have to spend $2000 in 3 months for 60,000 miles (annual fee $99)
This way if you are not planning to spend $5000 in 90 days you can space it out. It is a lot of money and all at once – it can be too much- so just do Hawaiian as they will be purchased by Alaska. Then after 3 months, sign up for Alaska Airlines.
Step 3: Now Get the Alaska Card
Step 4: What you need to know. In the first 90 days you have to spend $3000 in order to get 60,000 miles. ($99 annual fee)
Step 5: The points will be placed in each account
Once you have spent the money, the points go into your account –
Step 6: when the merger takes place – all flights will be One World which means you have an anywhere in the world round trip ticket for $198. The points will automatically go into the same account and merge together! You do nothing.
This is exactly how I travel hack … it is not 100% guarantee that the merger will go through. At the worst case scenario – the merger does not go through… so then what?
You take the 60,000 from Alaska and fly to LAX, SEA, or LAS stay a night or recheck bags and then use 60,000 miles from Hawaiian to go to Hawaii
Either way, I either paid $198 to go to Hawaii or $198 to go around the world 🌎
And if you don’t want to wait on the merger – then go to Hawaii or Alaska on the points!
If you have a spouse or significant other – you will both want to sign up for Hawaiian Air – like now!! If the merger goes through – Hawaiian airlines credit card will disappear – so it is really is a limited time offer! (Do not add them to your card, because they will not get the points unless they have their own card)
You have more time with Alaska – if they buy Hawaiian – the name will remain Alaska
If you are like … I don’t spend that kind of money in 3 months – okay; can you prepay a few bills, can you have a friend or relatives make a big purchase on your card and give you cash? Get creative!

Great article! I love learning about travel hacking and maximizing credit card points. My question is, what other airlines or credit card perks would you recommend exploring to maximize travel benefits? Great article!
